CSTI / BUSINESS SERIES

These days it seems that everybody wants to get rich by starting a new company. Come learn from an experienced expert about the

Rise and Fall of a Software Startup

Presented by Al Davis, Ph.D.

Professor, Business Strategy and Entrepreneurship at UCCS

Al Davis will remove some of the mystique surrounding the creation of IT companies and explore some of the key aspects of a startup business (e.g., personnel, finance, productization, marketing, sales, branding, boards, facilities and exit strategies). He will describe fundamental goals and approaches while sharing personal experiences on three startup companies.

This presentation will include a case study of a local software startup that survived and prospered for 4 years, only to meet an embarrassing death. During his talk, Al will provide “discussion questions” so the audience can brainstorm pro’s and con’s of key decisions.

Professor Davis was CEO and founder of Omni-Vista, Inc., Vice President at BTG, Inc., a Director of R&D for GTE, and a founding member of the board of directors of Requisite, Inc., eventually acquired by IBM. He has consulted for many corporations over the past 27 years including Boeing, Federal Express, FrontRange Solutions, IBM, MCI, Mitsubishi Electric, NEC, NTT, Rockwell, Samsung, Schlumberger, Sharp, Software Productivity Consortium, Storage Tek, and XAware.

In addition to authoring Software Requirements: Objects, Functions and  States, 201 Principles of Software Development, Great Software Debates, and Just Enough Requirements Management, Al was Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Software, an editor for Communications of the ACM, and has since 1987 been editor for the Journal of Systems and Software. He has published 250+ articles and has lectured 500+ times in more than 20 countries.
